I haven't been good about updating my journal, so I'm going to try monthly updates. Full disclosure: this might be the only month I remember to do it. LOL!

July has been a busy month, writing aside. We had our vacation to Pennsylvania, which included Gettysburg, Hershey and Scranton. We watched a Civil War battle reenactment, went on a ghost tour, and toured a coal mine. It was a really fun trip. My son and my nephew are already planning our next excursion. My son wants to go to Salem, Mass and my nephew wants to go to Germany. One is slightly more doable than the other. LOL!

Pic Under Cut )

My boy did a week-long Career Camp at the tech school where I work. He did half day Visual Arts & Communications and half day Pre-Engineering. He really liked the first class, which I've always thought would be a good fit for him when he's old enough to enroll in it. They did silk-screening on t-shirts, made songs on the computer, and worked in Photoshop. Every day he came to show me what he'd done.

It was also my boy's birthday this month. He turned 14. We had a party the Saturday before, with family, and then on the actual day I took off from work and we spent the day together. Went out for brunch, had birthday cheesecake, and picked up new videogames and movies. It was a really nice day.

Writing has been coming along pretty well, even though my July output hasn't been much. But I'm hard at work on my Harlequin BB fic for the [livejournal.com profile] story_works challenge. And still trying to finish up my apoca-fic for this month's challenge at [livejournal.com profile] whatif_au before next month's challenge goes up tomorrow. I've also been inspired by prompts at [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic and [livejournal.com profile] mcsheplets. I need all the inspiration and motivation I can get, for reals!

Last but not least, here is my list of posted fics. Not all are from July, since my updates have been spotty.

So, May was overall disappointing to me as far as the writing went. I had some grand fic plans that never reached fruition, and a lot of the time I found myself doing other things, like hanging out with Tumblr and YouTube, instead of writing because the words just didn't want to come.

Which is why I'm so happy to report that things are looking up for June. I was able to finish and post a long-standing WIP, and the new theme at [livejournal.com profile] whatif_au is inspiring the heck out of me. I already have one Soulmate fic done and two more underway. The words are flowing, friends, and I'm so happy!

Without further ado, here is the latest list of fic postings!

Hello, friends! I haven't been very good about updating, so let's see what needs to be covered.

First off, the Great Exodus to DW. I've been backing up my journal there but I have no plans for a permanent move at this time. LJ is my comfort zone and as long as it remains as such I'm in it to win it. [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri is going to make the move as of May 1st after a members vote, and [livejournal.com profile] whatif_au will be mirrored on both sites. So I've got a little bit of everything going on as far as moving goes.

In writing news I've been busily working on a long-standing WIP as part of [livejournal.com profile] melagan's Plot Bunny Dust-Off challenge. Not sure I'll get it finished by the end of the month but I've added two new scenes and I know what's coming next so that's a definite improvement.

I'll also be dusting off an even older bunny for next month's AU theme at [livejournal.com profile] whatif_au. It's at least five years old, maybe a little older, and the whole story is plotted out, characters are fleshed out, and maps have been drawn. Which is probably why I never wrote the thing. But I'm determined to do something with it. Determined, I say!

Trying to plan something for [livejournal.com profile] mmom next month. I have a vague idea of some naughty sexytimes that could happen. May is also when [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri does the New Frontiers challenge, and so I need to think of something I haven't written. Last year I did a poem.

As you can see there's still lots to do. And still not much time to do it all in. ::shakes head::

But I do have some fic to share, if you're interested:

brumeier: (Writer's Block)
In non-writing topics, I have used up this year's tax return. That didn't take long, I know. And while I did get some things I didn't need, like DVDs, I also got some clothes for me and the boy, new pots and pans, four new tires for my car, and new glasses for the both of us. Plus I paid off a medical bill and paid off the storage unit. I stretched that money as far as I could!

Luckily I get an extra paycheck this month from first job, so I can put that money away for vacation in July. And get Ms. Barry fixed before she goes into heat a third time. ::shakes head::

In school news, my son is finally passing math! First time this year. I'm very excited. He also asked me to buy him books, which never happens because he hates reading. Fortuitously, the latest book report he did (using a book off the approved list) sucked him into the Ranger's Apprentice series, which he discovered he liked. So much so that he actually read the whole book before he did his report (also a first this year). I'm so happy to buy him books! The first three in the series should be arriving today.

He was also nominated by his math teacher for a week-long STEM workshop, which sounds amazing but unfortunately is so far beyond our financial means it isn't funny. Also, my boy inherited my social anxiety, so he didn't want to go even though they're doing some cool stuff. Still, it's awesome that his math teacher (you know, that class he's been failing all year) thinks he has the stuff for the workshop.

In writing news, I was struggling for a while. No words, no progress being made. But I think I've finally turned a corner. I met several of my deadlines, though the last one is giving me ridiculous amounts of trouble. I'm feeling confident in the writing, though, and that's the main thing.

If you want to see what I've been up to, here's the list!

::coughs pathetically::

I have been sick, friends. Last Monday I woke up with a cough and it just went downhill from there. Flu test was negative. Strep test was negative. Doc finally diagnosed me with pneumonia and gave me three days of antibiotics. So I'm feeling much better, except for the cough that doesn't want to go away.

Yesterday was my first day back at first job, and tonight will be my first day back at second job. I'm already feeling the loss of the afternoon nap I got used to taking. I don't imagine I'll be worth much by the time my shift is over.

Being sick put a real wrench in the works in regards to writing things and getting them finished for deadlines. But I did manage to get some things done. Including my [livejournal.com profile] romancingmcshep fic, which I sent off to be beta'd today. Posting to follow soonest!

I neglected gushing over [livejournal.com profile] blueraccoon, my dear Shoobie friend and awesome person in general. Her birthday was on Monday, and unfortunately she's getting sick too. But she should absolutely be celebrated, not the least for finishing her epic Star Trek fic quite recently. (Like, triple digit wordcount epic. For reals.) Love you, Becc!

I cheated on International Fanworks Day by posting just the art I'd done to accompany my fic. The written scenes have been posted as I finish them. Still to finish are my [livejournal.com profile] sgareversebang and [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000. Hopefully I can make more headway now that my brain fog has lifted.

Here are some fics that got posted in the last couple of weeks but not mentioned here:

I just finished importing my journal to Dreamwidth. You can find me over there by the same name, . Right now I'm just backing things up over there. I'll still be on LJ full time, unless things go south. I just like it better over here. ::clings::

In the category of things I absolutely want but don't need, here's what I spent some of my Christmas money on:

Pic under cut )And now to the fic. Can I just say how much my muse is enjoying January so far? After struggling with fic for the previous couple of months I'm back with a vengeance, filling prompts and being awesome. How awesome, you might ask? Well, after three years participating, I finally got a bingo for [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo. All the thanks to [livejournal.com profile] darkmoore for helping make that happen!

Without further ado, here's what I've been up to so far this month (and the tail end of last month):

List under cut )
brumeier: (NoSo 2016)
The big news of the day is that it's November, which means the annual Miserable Fucks November Social has kicked off at [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri! In conjunction with NaNoWriMo, we're offering writing support and daily check-ins for the month. Even if you're not doing NaNo, November can be a good month to finish things up, or make a good amount of headway on an existing project. Come play with us!!

My big goal for the month is to start (and finish!) my [livejournal.com profile] sga_secretsanta fic. I know what I'm going to do, I just need to develop things a bit more and get going on it. It's pretty different from my usual, so I'm kind of excited and kind of nervous. ::grins::

In fic news, Monster Fest has ended and I'm pleased to say that I got eight fics written for it this year. Woo! Mostly SGA fics, with one for H50 and one for Lucifer (brand new to me) thrown in there. I always wish I could've done more. Maybe if I could keep my wordcounts down. Ah, well.

If you're interested, here's the latest!

This weekend was brutal, weather-wise. It's been so hot here, and muggy. On Saturday the thermostat in my apartment read 86 degrees (F) and that was with all the windows open and every fan on. It's amazing I got any writing done under the circumstances, but I did! In fact, I resurrected a fic that I'd started two years ago and finally finished it. Woo! I'm liking this trend of finally finishing some of my older WIPs. I hope I can keep it going!

Nice variety of fic to share with you this week, including a nice long piece full of angsty angstiness. ::grins::

Links Under Cut )
brumeier: (Stefon)
First of all, I need to report that I saw Star Trek: Beyond this weekend. And I have nothing but love for it. Seriously, Simon Pegg needs to write every Star Trek movie until the end of time. There were call backs to possibly every Star Trek 'verse, each character had their time to shine, and there was Beastie Boys music. Need I say more? ::grins::

I have also, against my better judgement, signed up for a couple of writing things. Even though my track record of meeting deadlines and completing challenges this year has been pretty dismal. But this time around I have [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz at my virtual side to help motivate me, since she signed up for both challenges, too. I'll be doing the Conspiracy Theory challenge at [livejournal.com profile] story_works (Nagi and I have a really cool idea for companion fics) and the [livejournal.com profile] sgareversebang. Fingers crossed that I'll be super deadline girl this time around!

I have the worst possible schedule for second job this week, but I had the whole weekend off and yesterday I was writing like a woman possessed! LOL! I finished a long-ish thing, which still needs editing and betaing, but I clocked in over 4.5k words just yesterday. Woo! Some of that was on the fic I'm writing with [livejournal.com profile] darkmoore, so yay for progress!

And I did share some fic after my last post, so here are the links:

Links Under Cut )
brumeier: (Bitch Please)
So, not much fic has been posted because I've been working on some longer stories. Which hopefully means that sometime this summer I'll have some meaty fics to share. Yay!

One of the fics I did post recently came along with a nasty comment. Possibly my first, but my memory isn't good enough to say that definitively. The commenter said, of my latest fluffy bit of AJ fic, that it was nauseatingly cloying and one of the reasons I absolutely hate and detest this type of story. Not even a hint of constructive criticism.

I have to tell you, I was caught up short by that. If they don't like this type of story, why bother reading it? Still, I kept my reply non-combative and moved on. I mean, I knew the story wasn't crap. But all it takes is one mean word to make me rethink things. But then my faithful readers chimed in and lambasted the commenter, and I'll be honest...that really made my day. ::grins:: It's so nice to have support from my target audience. So thank you, readers, for being my knights in shining virtual armor!

This was a good reminder to me of why, when I really don't like a fic, I just back out and look for another one. Or if it's something I have to comment on, for reasons, I try to find one nice thing I can say. Because there's no reason to hurt people's feelings, especially when their hearts are in the right place.

Without further ado, my two latest fics:

Title: Tasty Proposition
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0
Pairing: McDanno
Characters: Steve, Danny, Meka
Warnings: Implied PTSD

Prompt: Any, Any slash couple, one of them works in an adult 'space' (bookstore, leather bar, etc.)

In which Danny stumbles across a restaurant in a very unlikely location, and finds and even unlikelier man there that just might make Hawaii more interesting.

Title: Bumps in the Road
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Series: That McShep Boy
Pairing: McShep
Characters: John, Rodney, AJ
Warnings: family road trip angst, author's inability to write age-appropriate child dialogue

Prompts: Stargate Atlantis, any, the joys of traveling with small children

author's choice, author's choice, "We've been listening to this for the past three states! Can we please find something else?!"

any, any, "Are we there yet?"

In which John, Rodney and AJ take their first - and possibly last - Earthside road trip together.
brumeier: (Happy Cho)
So. Let's deal with the epic fail first thing. I withdrew from the [livejournal.com profile] sentinelbigbang because Jim and Blair just aren't talking to me. I had months and months to write a thing, which I really wanted to do because it's the Sentinel anniversary this year and everything. But I also didn't want to write some half-assed junk fic just to say I participated. ::sighs:: I feel really bad about it, and about the very real possibility that this fandom is going the way of Alice for me. Sentinel was my first slash fandom, and I haven't told all the stories I wanted to yet, but I'm not sure they'll ever get told now.

I have fandom angst! Gah!

On happier notes, I was able to write a thing for the New Frontiers Challenge at [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri and a smutty little something for [livejournal.com profile] mmom, and I feel pretty good about both those things.

Without further ado, here's the latest fic roundup:

Links Under Cut )
brumeier: (Bucky Not Amused)
You know, it shouldn't be that hard to commit to a weekly post of fic links. Why can't I do it? ::shakes head::

So, I had to drop out of [livejournal.com profile] intoabar. I don't feel good about it, but the fic was...not my best effort. I'm not giving up on it, but I honestly don't know how to fix it at this point.

But I have bigger fish to fry. Namely finishing my [livejournal.com profile] sentinelbigbang. I've literally had forever to work on it, because of a lengthy extension on the original due date. But it seems that once again I'll be racing for the finish and hopefully skidding in just under the wire. I really need to stop signing up for challenges.

There's also a self-imposed deadline of tomorrow (which I will fail at meeting, just FYI) to finish a gift fic that I started for my friend's birthday last year. ::sighs::

Anyway, enough whining. Without further ado, I give you my latest batch of fic:

brumeier: (Writer's Block)
I've been remiss in linking up my little fics. So bear with me, there's a lot of them!

And the prompt inspiration continues! Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic for helping me be so productive. (We won't talk about the piles of WIPs I should be working on instead. Nope.) Can you believe I've written 32 of these ficlets in the last two months? Crazy!

So, time for the Brumeier 2015 wrap-up.

In the world of fandom and writing, which, let's be honest, is where I spend most of my time, I was surprisingly productive. 35 posted fics! 123,674 posted words! See, this is why I keep a spreadsheet. Because all year I'm like, bah, too tired to write, I'm getting nothing done. False!

Fandom things that happened to me this year:

Bucky took hold of my imagination and my muse, and so I got to add the MCU fandom into my writing repertoire. I think it's safe to say there'll be more of him to come in 2016. ::grins::

I was also lucky enough to be the recipient of fanart, which is just so amazing. I have zero art skills, so people taking the time to draw for me? Awesome! [livejournal.com profile] danceswithgary made this for one of my SGA fics, and Bonanza drew me some Sentinel art for Sentinel Summer Camp and Soulmates. (The art is posted in the fic.) Love it all!

Just to cover all media angles, the lovely [livejournal.com profile] librarychick_94 did a podcast of one of my SGA stories, Sight Unseen. Seriously, the fandom generosity has overwhelmed me this year.

And just because I feel like it, here's a list of all the fics I put out there to the world in 2015:

List of Works under cut )
brumeier: (Stefon)
Managed another bunch of stories for week two of Monster Fest at [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri, including an H50 fic that had been living in my WIP folder for many, many moons. ::grins::

Not sure I'll be able to maintain three fics a week through the end of the month. My mom was here visiting and that threw off my writing schedule. But I'll try!

All but the Hawaii Five-0 fic are additions to the Unexpected Discoveries 'verse.

Title: Shambles
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0
Pairing: McDanno
Monster Fest Theme: The Undead

Summary: Sometimes the smallest thing can have the most devastating effects. The microscopic SM-9 virus was supposed to help people. Cancer researchers had been excited by the discovery, certain this was finally the cure they were looking for. SM-9 did show some promise attacking malignant tumors, but the side effects, though few, were seemingly insurmountable. It ate away the part of the brain that dealt with higher function, leaving behind mindless drones that knew only rage and hunger.

The military conscripted the top scientific minds to find a cure, or at the very least an immunization for the people that were left uninfected. In the meantime, humanity did its best to survive. Steve tried to hold things together for Grace. And Danny just tried to get back home again.

*o*

Title: Massachusetts Sea Serpent
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: McShep
Monster Fest Theme: Lovecraftian (aka tentacles)

Summary: In 1817, eyewitness account surfaced of a hundred-foot-long serpent-like creature off the coast of Gloucester, in the Atlantic ocean. For an entire month, people from all walks of life reported sightings that universally agreed that the creature was a sea serpent. Given that this was a large fishing community, these reports have a certain credibility that others do not.

Sightings of the sea serpent continued on into the 1960s. As recently as last year, passengers on a cruise ship reported seeing a serpentine form off the bow of the ship, and several of them captured some compelling video footage. The MU team is here to see if we can find any trace of this wily ocean dweller.

*o*

Title: Hawaii's Night Marchers
Fandoms: Stargate Atlantis/Hawaii Five-0
Pairings: McShep/McDanno
Monster Fest Theme: Ghost, Ghouls and Wraith

Summary: The Hawaiian Islands are steeped in tradition and folklore that goes back fifteen hundred years. And with all that history, it’s no wonder that paranormal encounters here are fairly common. The MU team will be investigating one particular story – the Night Marchers. Belief in these ancestral specters is still so strong in some native families that they’re afraid to even speak of them, because invoking the name might bring the Night Marchers right to a family’s doorstep. Is this merely superstitious belief? Or do these ghostly processions continue to haunt the people of Hawaii? That’s what we’ll try to find out!
brumeier: (Bucky Not Amused)
So, I find myself signed up (or planning to sign up) for three writing things that wrap up at various times in December/January. What motivated me to do this, when the writing has been so hard for me lately? Perhaps a need to be part of fun exchanges. Perhaps the desire to have someone write me a thing. Or perhaps I'm just impulsive.

What have I signed up for, you ask? Let me tell you! ::grins::

The Sentinel Big Bang ([livejournal.com profile] sentinelbigbang) I participated in the Reverse Bang, which wrapped up in June and left me a ball of stress. I swore no more challenges. And yet two weeks later I signed up for this one. But I know why. This fandom is celebrating its 20th anniversary and I want to be a part of that. Now if only I could make progress on my fic. Due date: January 27

Winter In Hawaii. I came across this on Tumblr, and it's being hosted through AO3. I've never participated in a Hawaii Five-0 exchange, and this is the first time this particular one is running. Which is maybe why I'm planning on signing up on the 15th. I could still change my mind...but I probably won't. Due date: December 31

SGA Secret Santa ([livejournal.com profile] sga_secretsanta) Last year, the wonderful mods who ran [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa decided to end the exchange after ten long years. I was sad, since it was only my second year participating. But then it was resurrected with a new name and new mods, because the SGA fandom will never die! ::grins:: Of the three challenges, this one makes the most sense because it's the fandom I'm most active in. Sign-ups end on the 13th, if you're interested! Due date: December 1

So, can I get all these done? Who knows. Two jobs, a boy just starting junior high, and my amazing distractibility make me a bit dubious. Not to mention all the WIPs I'm still working on, and the original piece I want to do for submission to an anthology. (Which, gah! Submission deadline is October 1st. I thought it was February. Uh oh.) Well, I'll say this. I dream big. ::rolls eyes::
