So, sometimes I make these title cards for my fics. Mostly the movie fusions, I don't know why. But for More Joy Day (today!) I made one for [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz for her Blood and Water series.

If you haven't read any of it, you really should. It's an SGA AU series where both John and Evan have mafia backgrounds that they've tried to escape from. There's some dark stuff in here, and Evan takes his organizational skills to scary new levels, but it's also very, very hopeful because they don't have to be defined by their pasts, or their parentage.

Bonus points for working in a really amazing three-way relationship in such a realistic way. It's so good, y'all!

Not gonna lie. Had a crap-tastic day. Family drama amped up to eleven.

But I have wonderful friends who cheered me up, offered a virtual shoulder to cry on, and generally made me feel so much better. All the thanks to my pals Sharon, [livejournal.com profile] taste_is_sweet, [livejournal.com profile] darkmoore, [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz and all the Shoobies at [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri. I love you guys!

As an extra bonus, [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz wrote me a hilariously awesome ficlet based on a conversation we had one day. It's called Beam Me Up, it's McShep, and I can't recommend it enough. Did I mention hilarious?

The support of the online community means so much to me. Real friends, each and every one of you. ::hugs all around::
brumeier: (cheers)
A very happy birthday to my new friend and partner in SGA crime, [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz! And such a milestone birthday, too. I hope you have a great day!

And, because I hate coming to a birthday empty-handed, I made a thing. Nagi and I met over on [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, where she has crafted the most amazing crossover 'verse. You should totally check it out it. If you want to know why, just take a gander at today's post at [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec.

(the base Sheppard manip isn't mine, I found it online, but I added the rest)
brumeier: (SGA Meant To Be)
OMG, friends, I'm having the best Friday!

I got a notice first thing this morning that RavenclawProngs had gifted me an SGA fic on AO3! It's called Things Mssrs. Sheppard and McKay Are No Longer Allowed to Do. It's not finished yet, but what's up so far is hilarious! This is exactly the kind of thing I'd expect from the boys once they're old enough to be in assisted living.

As if that wasn't awesome enough, I also got a comment on one of my older Sentinel fics, Sentinel Summer Camp. The commenter, Bonanza, liked my fic so much she made art for it! Look at it! Look how adorable it is!

Pic under cut )
Lastly, I went ahead and bought my photo op with Joe Flanigan for next year's Stargate con, since I had the extra money this week. There's no turning back now! LOL! Hopefully the registration tickets I can afford won't go on sale until after the holidays. ::fingers crossed::

Friday the 13th unlucky? Not for this girl! ::grins::

Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] popkin16, who organized last week's Author Appreciation week! You can find the master list of recs on her journal. There are some great fics to be found in there!

I've been in the SGA fandom since 2013, though it feels like so much longer. Even though the show itself ended before I got on board the McShep train, I don't see any end to the ideas I get for fics for this fandom. My SGA file is full to bursting with bunnies, WIPs and pics snagged off Google. ::grins:: So it's nice to see it still being celebrated.

Viva Atlantis!

For [livejournal.com profile] popkin16’s Author Appreciation Week.

It’s my day to rec the SGA fics of my dear friend [livejournal.com profile] taste_is_sweet. My suggestion? Go to AO3 and read all of them. Every single fic, in this fandom and any other. She’s a skilled writer, providing both intricate plots and intuitive characterizations.

These are four of my absolute faves, though I do love them all. These are stories of John and Rodney’s incredibly strong, incredibly deep friendship. They take care of each other, they save each other, and eventually work through all their emotional constipation to get together in a romantic way.

Taste is my writing hero, my sister-from-another-mister, my beta, my friend. Just an awesome person all around!

Keepsakes

Summary: Rodney looked confused, then angry. "It’s not a cage," he said, like she’d insulted him. "It’s a habitat. There’ll be a pond--fresh water, of course!--and trees, and--"

"John had very specific wishes about what should happen to him if he couldn’t be cured, Rodney," Elizabeth said.

This was the fic that made me fall in love with Taste’s writing, and my gushing fangirl comments opened up a dialogue between us that turned into friendship. It’s post-Conversion and so perfect in every possible way. I never knew I liked bug!John till this fic, and the lengths Rodney was willing to go to make him happy despite his altered state filled me with so many feels. So. Many. Feels.

*o*o*

Free Fall

Summary: It was just mud, after all. And after the opportunistic parasite that nearly killed Rodney, Carson was very, very careful about making sure no one was sick before letting them go on missions. So everyone on Team Sheppard was healthy. And it was just mud. Just like Ronon said when Teyla was grimacing about her hair: a little mud never killed anyone.

Okay, so I promise not all of these recs will involve John being ill in some fashion. LOL! But this was so well done, a nice parallel to the events of The Shrine only this time it’s up to Rodney to literally talk John off the ledge and get him the help he needs. John’s spiral down into a kind of brilliant madness was subtle and so well done. And of course was the impetus for those two idiots to deal with their feelings. ::grins::

*o*o*

Children’s Classics

Summary: John has no idea how the prisoners choose the song. He just knows that if he can recognize it, it's been a good day; if he can't, it hasn't.

John and Rodney are prisoners offworld, but not together. This is pretty heart-wrenching all the way through, especially the lengths that Rodney goes to in order to communicate with, and take care of, John. And John is so grateful for that connection, and acts on Rodney’s instructions without even a second thought, which shows so much trust. This whole fic is a perfect demonstration of the power of their friendship, and Rodney’s ability to understand nuance and be badass in his own way.

*o*o*

The Fundamental Things

Summary: There are some people you never forget, even when you can't remember anything.

(Rodney couldn't lose him. If something happened to John, Rodney didn't think he could keep holding on. Not with the chair slowly taking him apart and no one to keep himself together for.

He had no real idea who John was, but it was like Rodney knew him in ways that went deeper than memory. John was vitally important, as necessary to Rodney's existence as the stale air circulating through the ship or the awful protein chunks they ate to survive. It wasn't even a question of being able to hold on without him. Without him, Rodney wouldn't want to.

But even beyond his new injuries, John was slipping away so fast. Rodney didn't know how many more times he could be forced into the chair before he wouldn't remember his own name. And Rodney was losing too much to be able to remind him.)

I’m not just reccing this because she wrote it for me. ::grins:: And also, I lied. It seems my favorite fics are ones where John is incapacitated and Rodney has to come up with a plan even when he’s not in much better shape. Taste is incredible at writing competent!Rodney stories, and this is a fine example of that. I’ve read it many times and it still makes me happy cry at the end.

John and Rodney’s connection in this fic is so deep that even when they lose the memory of simple words, they still remember each other on a subconscious level. Bonus points for John creating the opposite of intact: out-tact! LOL!

For [livejournal.com profile] popkin16’s SGA Author Appreciation Week.

Today I’m reccing Popkin herself. What do you need to know about her? She leaves the most wonderful, thoughtful comments on my fics – I love getting one of her comments, they always make me smile! Popkin is still a very staunch supporter of all things Stargate Atlantis, which is wonderful for the writers like me who are still very much entrenched in the fandom.

Here are four of my favorite Popkin fics in the SGA fandom, though you should go right ahead and read everything else she has on AO3. You won’t be disappointed!

The Work of Mourning

Summary: Once a year, per tradition, the expedition gathers on a pier, paper lanterns in hand.

If this fic doesn’t break your heart in about a hundred different ways, you must be made of stone. There are lots of team feels, lots of McShep feels…there are feels all over the damn place! The character insights are superb all around. There’s a happy ending, thank goodness, but the bulk of this will make you cry. It’s so worth it.

*o*o*

Nature Intended

Summary: It bothered Rodney that it bothered John. Didn’t John know Rodney would love him no matter what?

Just a little domestic fic, but I love it to pieces. Rodney is often written as the one with body image issues, and it’s nice to see that turned around. This fic also shows Rodney’s insight into John’s character, and the patience he has when it’s something that really matters. And something bothering John definitely matters to Rodney. It’s sweet and fluffy and affirming!

*o*o*

Magnetic Properties of Orange Fleece

Summary: Atlantis' return to the Pegasus Galaxy lands them on a cold planet. Rodney brings out the fleece. John is captivated.

Written for the SGA…10 Years Later Fest, this fic is a wonderful homage to Rodney’s orange fleece. The fabric of legend! LOL! It certainly has a desirable effect on John. This could have turned into a simple PWP piece, but instead it’s a lovely character study of John and the feelings that the fleece inspires in him. And Rodney’s reaction is pure Rodney gold!

*o*o*

Delivery Fee

Summary: Rodney's life is not a bad porno, but the ridiculously attractive pizza guy that knocks on his door one night kind of makes him wish it was.

Popkin probably won’t be thrilled that I included this one, but I can’t help it…it’s so good! It’s no secret that I love an AU and this is a pretty good one. Our boys in college, being all awkward and ridiculous. The best part of this, for me, is that John is the one who notices Rodney and makes the first move. The whole fic is just a lot of fun!

Lookie, lookie what my wonderful friend [livejournal.com profile] taste_is_sweet sent me for my birthday!

Aren't Cap and Bucky just adorable? These little Funko bobbles are so cute, and they have a very nice bobble as well. ::grins::

Now they just need to make SGA bobbles and my life will be complete.

Thanks, Taste, for your continued awesome!

Edited to Add: SQUEEE! Not just bobbles, but a Stucky fic featuring Rodney McKay! I don't know what I did to earn this kind of good karma, but I'm not complaining. The fic is called As Big and Bright as the Stars. Thank you AGAIN, Taste! Best. Birthday. Ever.
brumeier: (Renfield)
Okay, fandom. There's a lot we don't agree on, I'll be the first to admit it. But you're really letting me down here. The amazing [livejournal.com profile] taste_is_sweet is in the midst of writing an amazing Marvel series which, I might add, isn't even a fandom I normally read in.

It's called Dread and Darling Boys, and is mostly Grant Ward-focused, though the first installment is all Bucky. It's full of angst and Hydra torture and how a man can be unmade. What I really want to know is...why the heck aren't you reading this??

I understand that Ward has become someone the MCU fans despise, but you're really doing him - and Taste! - a disservice by not reading these fics. Because no-one deserves what Ward has done to him by Hydra. No-one.

Or maybe it's just me, thinking that even the worst person can be redeemed, that they don't always think what they're doing is wrong or evil. Sometimes it's about following orders. I missed a lot of the end of AoS but I understand Ward has some reasons for taking the path he did. If we can all get behind Bucky, why isn't there any love left for Ward?

agents-of-shield-marvel-grant-ward-hydra-abc

Anyway, I'm reccing this whole series because it's incredibly well written and really gets me in the feels. So spread the love, people! Let's get this series the attention it deserves! Ward isn't the only one on a mission!
