’s Author Appreciation Week.
It’s my day to rec the SGA fics of my dear friend taste_is_sweet
. My suggestion? Go to AO3 and read all of them. Every single fic, in this fandom and any other. She’s a skilled writer, providing both intricate plots and intuitive characterizations.
These are four of my absolute faves, though I do love them all. These are stories of John and Rodney’s incredibly strong, incredibly deep friendship. They take care of each other, they save each other, and eventually work through all their emotional constipation to get together in a romantic way.
Taste is my writing hero, my sister-from-another-mister, my beta, my friend. Just an awesome person all around!
KeepsakesSummary: Rodney looked confused, then angry. "It’s not a
cage," he said, like she’d insulted him. "It’s a
habitat. There’ll be a pond--fresh water, of course!--and trees, and--""John had very specific wishes about what should happen to him if he couldn’t be cured, Rodney," Elizabeth said.
This was the fic that made me fall in love with Taste’s writing, and my gushing fangirl comments opened up a dialogue between us that turned into friendship. It’s post-Conversion and so perfect in every possible way. I never knew I liked bug!John till this fic, and the lengths Rodney was willing to go to make him happy despite his altered state filled me with so many feels. So. Many. Feels.
*o*o*Free FallSummary: It was just mud, after all. And after the opportunistic parasite that nearly killed Rodney, Carson was very, very careful about making sure no one was sick before letting them go on missions. So everyone on Team Sheppard was healthy. And it was just mud. Just like Ronon said when Teyla was grimacing about her hair: a little mud never killed anyone.
Okay, so I promise not all of these recs will involve John being ill in some fashion. LOL! But this was so well done, a nice parallel to the events of The Shrine only this time it’s up to Rodney to literally talk John off the ledge and get him the help he needs. John’s spiral down into a kind of brilliant madness was subtle and so well done. And of course was the impetus for those two idiots to deal with their feelings. ::grins::
*o*o*Children’s ClassicsSummary: John has no idea how the prisoners choose the song. He just knows that if he can recognize it, it's been a good day; if he can't, it hasn't.
John and Rodney are prisoners offworld, but not together. This is pretty heart-wrenching all the way through, especially the lengths that Rodney goes to in order to communicate with, and take care of, John. And John is so grateful for that connection, and acts on Rodney’s instructions without even a second thought, which shows so much trust. This whole fic is a perfect demonstration of the power of their friendship, and Rodney’s ability to understand nuance and be badass in his own way.
*o*o*The Fundamental ThingsSummary:
There are some people you never forget, even when you can't remember anything.(Rodney couldn't lose him. If something happened to John, Rodney didn't think he could keep holding on. Not with the chair slowly taking him apart and no one to keep himself together for. He had no real idea who John was, but it was like Rodney knew him in ways that went deeper than memory. John was vitally important, as necessary to Rodney's existence as the stale air circulating through the ship or the awful protein chunks they ate to survive. It wasn't even a question of being able to hold on without him. Without him, Rodney wouldn't want to. But even beyond his new injuries, John was slipping away so fast. Rodney didn't know how many more times he could be forced into the chair before he wouldn't remember his own name. And Rodney was losing too much to be able to remind him.)
I’m not just reccing this because she wrote it for me. ::grins:: And also, I lied. It seems my favorite fics are ones where John is incapacitated and Rodney has to come up with a plan even when he’s not in much better shape. Taste is incredible at writing competent!Rodney stories, and this is a fine example of that. I’ve read it many times and it still makes me happy cry at the end.
John and Rodney’s connection in this fic is so deep that even when they lose the memory of simple words, they still remember each other on a subconscious level. Bonus points for John creating the opposite of intact: out-tact! LOL!
