Friends, I have been remiss in sharing my latest postcard acquisitions (and I really need to get going on the reciprocal part as well). Look what I got on Saturday:

Thank you so much [profile] thesmallhobbit and [personal profile] alisanne for the wonderful notes you sent me! I was so excited to get them! My thoughtful friends are thoughtful! ::grins::

My town is too small to have postcards, so I'm going to make some. Stay tuned!
brumeier: (Stefon)
I haven't been good about updating my journal, so I'm going to try monthly updates. Full disclosure: this might be the only month I remember to do it. LOL!

July has been a busy month, writing aside. We had our vacation to Pennsylvania, which included Gettysburg, Hershey and Scranton. We watched a Civil War battle reenactment, went on a ghost tour, and toured a coal mine. It was a really fun trip. My son and my nephew are already planning our next excursion. My son wants to go to Salem, Mass and my nephew wants to go to Germany. One is slightly more doable than the other. LOL!

Pic Under Cut )

My boy did a week-long Career Camp at the tech school where I work. He did half day Visual Arts & Communications and half day Pre-Engineering. He really liked the first class, which I've always thought would be a good fit for him when he's old enough to enroll in it. They did silk-screening on t-shirts, made songs on the computer, and worked in Photoshop. Every day he came to show me what he'd done.

It was also my boy's birthday this month. He turned 14. We had a party the Saturday before, with family, and then on the actual day I took off from work and we spent the day together. Went out for brunch, had birthday cheesecake, and picked up new videogames and movies. It was a really nice day.

Writing has been coming along pretty well, even though my July output hasn't been much. But I'm hard at work on my Harlequin BB fic for the [livejournal.com profile] story_works challenge. And still trying to finish up my apoca-fic for this month's challenge at [livejournal.com profile] whatif_au before next month's challenge goes up tomorrow. I've also been inspired by prompts at [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic and [livejournal.com profile] mcsheplets. I need all the inspiration and motivation I can get, for reals!

Last but not least, here is my list of posted fics. Not all are from July, since my updates have been spotty.

So, I happened to be fixing a thing on one of my posted fics and I noticed my digi art isn't there. Instead is a notice from Photobucket about 3rd Party hosting. Okay. So I went to the site and I see they've changed things up. If I want to be able to embed my pics - which I do - at places like AO3, I have to sign up for P500. Do you want to know the yearly cost of being able to embed my own stuff? $399!!!

Who can afford that nonsense?

But I don't know where else to go with my title cards and fanart. That's why I need your help, friends. Where do you keep your pics for sharing purposes? Does it let you use embed links? Is it super expensive?

I can only assume all my art on AO3 now has this message, which makes me so mad. I want my pics back!

Help!!
brumeier: (Bucky Not Amused)
Has anyone seen my muse? He's fucked off again and taken all my words with him. Please keep an eye out for him. This is what he looks like:

(Yes, that's Toni Collette from United States of Tara.)

Sometimes I wish I could trade Buck in for Bucky (see icon), because I feel like Bucky would be more ruthlessly efficient when it comes to managing the words. Buck just hides somewhere with his booze and his porn and leave me high and dry. Sigh. This is a real problem, since I have challenges I wanted to fill this month and I just can't get anything going.

In family news, my brother finally found a place to live. Whew! His application at my place was denied, which I don't understand because there have been some sketchy people living there and whatever his other faults may be my bro doesn't peddle drugs. But he's super excited about his new place, and showed me some pics when he came over yesterday to borrow my vacuum. (Guess who's getting a vacuum for a housewarming gift?) Hopefully Saturday we can crack open the storage unit and he can take out whatever furniture he wants, help me get the rest of my stuff out, and then it'll just be the ex's crap in there. Goals!

My son had a huge anxiety attack on Sunday night, so I suspect we've cycled back around to that again. Every few months he goes through a bad patch of nightmares, anxiety and paranoia. His counselor would like him to have a full psychological eval, so I'm trying to get that set up. What do you tell a thirteen year old who is crying his eyes out because he's scared of dying and scared there's no happy afterlife? I was really earning my salary on Mother's Day this year, I can tell you that.

Overall things are going well. I've had light schedules at my deli job the last two weeks, which has been super nice. And the weather has been so nice the last two days. Sunshine! I'd almost forgotten what it looked like.

And I do have some fic to share since my last update. If you're interested! ::grins::

So here's something new that's happening at my house. My boy, who will be turning fourteen this year, has made his first forays behind the wheel of my car. He can't get his permit until he's sixteen but here in the country boys learn how to drive early. I'm pretty sure my brother could drive by the time he was eleven.

I'm not taking the boy out on the road, not even the backroads like my dad did with my brother. He's strictly parking lot until he's old enough to legally be on the road, but I figured it was a good time to get him familiarized with how the driving thing works. All this has amounted to so far is him twice parking the car. But look how happy he is!

Right now I'm seeking some tips or advice for teaching someone to drive. This is all new to me, and so far the only criteria I have is that his father doesn't teach him. LOL! He's a terrible driver.

Any thoughts or suggestions, friends?
brumeier: (Happy Cho)
Hello, friends! I haven't been very good about updating, so let's see what needs to be covered.

First off, the Great Exodus to DW. I've been backing up my journal there but I have no plans for a permanent move at this time. LJ is my comfort zone and as long as it remains as such I'm in it to win it. [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri is going to make the move as of May 1st after a members vote, and [livejournal.com profile] whatif_au will be mirrored on both sites. So I've got a little bit of everything going on as far as moving goes.

In writing news I've been busily working on a long-standing WIP as part of [livejournal.com profile] melagan's Plot Bunny Dust-Off challenge. Not sure I'll get it finished by the end of the month but I've added two new scenes and I know what's coming next so that's a definite improvement.

I'll also be dusting off an even older bunny for next month's AU theme at [livejournal.com profile] whatif_au. It's at least five years old, maybe a little older, and the whole story is plotted out, characters are fleshed out, and maps have been drawn. Which is probably why I never wrote the thing. But I'm determined to do something with it. Determined, I say!

Trying to plan something for [livejournal.com profile] mmom next month. I have a vague idea of some naughty sexytimes that could happen. May is also when [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri does the New Frontiers challenge, and so I need to think of something I haven't written. Last year I did a poem.

As you can see there's still lots to do. And still not much time to do it all in. ::shakes head::

But I do have some fic to share, if you're interested:

It's a bittersweet birthday, to be sure, since so many people are leaving since the change of ownership. But it's been good times for me since I joined, and I'll always have fond memories even if everything's changing.

brumeier: (Writer's Block)
In non-writing topics, I have used up this year's tax return. That didn't take long, I know. And while I did get some things I didn't need, like DVDs, I also got some clothes for me and the boy, new pots and pans, four new tires for my car, and new glasses for the both of us. Plus I paid off a medical bill and paid off the storage unit. I stretched that money as far as I could!

Luckily I get an extra paycheck this month from first job, so I can put that money away for vacation in July. And get Ms. Barry fixed before she goes into heat a third time. ::shakes head::

In school news, my son is finally passing math! First time this year. I'm very excited. He also asked me to buy him books, which never happens because he hates reading. Fortuitously, the latest book report he did (using a book off the approved list) sucked him into the Ranger's Apprentice series, which he discovered he liked. So much so that he actually read the whole book before he did his report (also a first this year). I'm so happy to buy him books! The first three in the series should be arriving today.

He was also nominated by his math teacher for a week-long STEM workshop, which sounds amazing but unfortunately is so far beyond our financial means it isn't funny. Also, my boy inherited my social anxiety, so he didn't want to go even though they're doing some cool stuff. Still, it's awesome that his math teacher (you know, that class he's been failing all year) thinks he has the stuff for the workshop.

In writing news, I was struggling for a while. No words, no progress being made. But I think I've finally turned a corner. I met several of my deadlines, though the last one is giving me ridiculous amounts of trouble. I'm feeling confident in the writing, though, and that's the main thing.

If you want to see what I've been up to, here's the list!

::coughs pathetically::

I have been sick, friends. Last Monday I woke up with a cough and it just went downhill from there. Flu test was negative. Strep test was negative. Doc finally diagnosed me with pneumonia and gave me three days of antibiotics. So I'm feeling much better, except for the cough that doesn't want to go away.

Yesterday was my first day back at first job, and tonight will be my first day back at second job. I'm already feeling the loss of the afternoon nap I got used to taking. I don't imagine I'll be worth much by the time my shift is over.

Being sick put a real wrench in the works in regards to writing things and getting them finished for deadlines. But I did manage to get some things done. Including my [livejournal.com profile] romancingmcshep fic, which I sent off to be beta'd today. Posting to follow soonest!

I neglected gushing over [livejournal.com profile] blueraccoon, my dear Shoobie friend and awesome person in general. Her birthday was on Monday, and unfortunately she's getting sick too. But she should absolutely be celebrated, not the least for finishing her epic Star Trek fic quite recently. (Like, triple digit wordcount epic. For reals.) Love you, Becc!

I cheated on International Fanworks Day by posting just the art I'd done to accompany my fic. The written scenes have been posted as I finish them. Still to finish are my [livejournal.com profile] sgareversebang and [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000. Hopefully I can make more headway now that my brain fog has lifted.

Here are some fics that got posted in the last couple of weeks but not mentioned here:

Hi friends! ::waves::

It's been a while since I've done a decent update on the life and times of Bru, so here it is.

My 13 year old son has a girlfriend. It's not his first one, but he was on a dating ban because the last girl that wanted to be his girlfriend was awful. She treated him horribly. Hoping this one is nicer. She's a year older. They went to the school's Winter Semi-formal dance as friends, and he asked her out at the end of the night. I applaud his bravery because I remember how terrifying that could be.

My mother is turning into quite the little activist. She participated in a Women's March in Miami the day after Inauguration Day, and this weekend she did a march in Palm Beach. Look how cute she is! (She's the one in the orange shirt.)

Pic Under Cut )

I had a scary encounter at the laundromat yesterday. I went late in the day, and I was the only one sitting in there. The laundromat has a TV mounted to the wall that unfortunately plays nothing but Fox News. I've submitted a request begging them to change it to any other channel. Otherwise I might have to scale the vending machine and look for the buttons to do it manually. Anyhoo, this big guy comes in to get his clothes out of the dryer and there's a Trump interview happening on TV. He salutes the TV, and then very loudly starts yelling at it when someone else comes on camera with some presidential criticism. The guy had an accent I couldn't place, and he was furious that anyone would say bad things about Trump. "I pray for him every night!" There was some ranting about Iranians or something, I don't know, I was trying not to listen. And then he looked at me and asked, "Do you support Trump?"

Um....

Luckily he didn't stay long.

In writing news, I'm trying to get like six or seven different fics written. It's slow going. I have gift fics and challenge fics and this crazy International Fanworks Day fic I'm struggling with. If I get them all done by deadline I'll be very pleasantly surprised.

Really big news, if only for me, is that I'm planning on starting a writing challenge on LJ which will be independent from [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri. Details Under Cut )

Here's some gratitude, which is overdue.

Finally, the one new posted fic that I have to share. So many more coming, though, I promise!

Title: Beneath the Wristband
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: McShep
Characters: John, Rodney
Warnings: Mention of past suicide attempt

Prompt: Stargate: Atlantis, John Sheppard and/or Rodney McKay, Scar (Foxes)

In which John is a mystery Rodney would love to solve, but some things are painful to learn.
brumeier: (cheers)
Let's be real. 2016 was a rough year out in the world. We lost a lot of beloved icons. America gained a lunatic for a president. There was violence and natural disasters and a general feeling of hopelessness. I'd like to say that we have a chance to turn things around in 2017, but I'm not honestly very hopeful about that.

BUT. Things in my corner of the world weren't terrible. I voted in my first-ever presidential election (yes, I'm in my 40s and I'm a slacker). I attended my very first Stargate Convention and got to meet the men I write so much about. I also got to meet some of my online friends: [livejournal.com profile] ride_4ever, [livejournal.com profile] aivix, and smiles2go. I was able to keep a roof over my son's head and food on the table. I visited my mom and my grandparents in Florida. I continued to confound family and friends with my very pleasant relationship with my ex and his girlfriend. I spent a lot of quality time with my brother.

There were lady ghostbusters and lady x-wing pilots and a whole new Tarzan to ogle. I continue to expand my social consciousness. I strive to be a better person, and to make my corner of the world a happy place. I continue to be amazed at what a warm and welcoming place [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri has become.

And friends, I wrote my ass off. ::grins:: This was mostly due to [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, which I started visiting regularly for prompt inspiration. (And had the pleasant side effect of making a new super awesome friend in [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz.)

I posted 157 fics this year. Gah! Insane! 130 of them were prompt fills.

My posted wordcount for the year is an astounding 269,311. So many words!

I participated in 12 fannish challenges/exchanges/etc.

My hurt/comfort bingo card has eleven squares filled in, beating my last year's record of two. No bingoes, but I'm okay with that.

For this gal, 2016 wasn't a bad year. Let's hope 2017 doesn't kick my ass. Or yours! ::hugs to all:: Better days ahead for all of us!
brumeier: (Happy Cho)
I hope everyone who was/is celebrating this month is having or has had a wonderful time of it!

My Christmas celebrations, spread out over four days, went very well. I got to spend time with just about everyone in my family, which was nice, and there was no shortage of food. A personal highlight for me was going to my mother-in-law's for lunch. She dragged my son off and when he came back he looked like this:

Pic under cut )

He'd never have done that for me, but his grandmother can get him to do anything. LOL! Most of the other pics I have of my boy from the holiday festivities feature his usual stone-faced expression, which he gets from his father. Because why would he want anyone to know he's having a good time? Kids.

Went to see Star Wars: Rogue One last night. It was awesome. And heart-breaking. It was similar to my experience going to see Titanic all those years ago. "Maybe they won't hit the iceberg this time!" ::shakes head:: Ah, well. One of the things that made me the most excited? Lady X-Wing pilots! Woo! And then of course I got the news about Carrie Fisher. Can we please not lose anyone else now? Please?

Okay, on to happier things. Like wishing a belated Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] annieb1955! I hope you had a great birthday!

Also, I have fic! Not a lot of fic, because the muse has been flighty and RL has been crazy. But I did manage to get two of my three holiday fics finished and posted. Still working on the third. Ideally I'd get that done before the New Year, but probably not. So here's the latest:

brumeier: (NoSo 2016)
Here I am, with a post full of belatedness.

Happy American Thanksgiving! Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] elderwitty! Happy everything else I've missed since my last post. ::grins::

Things have not been going well, friends. My brother is going through a divorce, and not a nice, chill one like mine. He got booted from his house, so he's set up shop on my couch for the unforeseeable future. I love my brother, I do. But not every single day in my tiny apartment. He's also unemployed, so there hasn't been any help with things like groceries, although he's been doing some handyman things and a lot of cooking. (He cooked for me on Thanksgiving because I had to work.)

Even better is that his girlfriend also spends the weekends living on my couch. Too. Many. People. Seriously, my apartment is tiny.

The most immediate fallout from this situation is that my writing has dropped off to almost nothing. I have no quiet time. No alone time. My brother went visiting relatives this past weekend and told me to enjoy the solitude. Which is funny, because I worked all day Friday, was out of the house for my own holiday visiting all day Saturday, and then he was back on Sunday.

Needless to say I'm very worried about my Secret Santa deadline, which is December 7th. I've made almost no progress on it, unless you count restarting it about four or five times. Not good, not good, not good. If anyone has a direct line to the powers that be, please put in a good word for my brother. He needs a job and an apartment that isn't mine. Please and thank you!

But somewhere along the line I did find time to write, so here's my one thing:

Title: Dance With the Devil
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: McShep
Characters: John, Rodney
Warnings: Murder, dark character, description of a corpse

Prompt: Stargate: Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, John's the charismatic serial killer who's been terrorizing people all over [east/west coast/state/area] and Rodney's the FBI officer who's been chasing after him.
brumeier: (Stefon)
So, since I last posted about the kitty I found in the parking lot, there have been developments. The vet confirmed that the kitten is in fact a girl. But we'd been calling her Barry for a week, and Barry she will stay. Because we don't care about gender labels. And also, I really like the name Barry (named for The Flash). ::grins::

Vet estimates she was only about five weeks old when I found her. She'll be going for all her kitten shots on Halloween. She's notoriously difficult to photograph when she's awake, but I do have this to offer:

In fic news, I was able to finish the Conspiracy Theory challenge at [livejournal.com profile] story_works, though not with the fic I originally intended to write. But I was so glad to be able to participate, and look at the cool banner I got!

Here's the latest in Brumeier fic posting, all of these entries for Monster Fest at [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri:

So, still enjoying Columbus Day weekend. I had my friend Cali over for a Kathleen Turner quadruple-feature on Saturday. It went a little bit awry, though, when I heard what sounded like a bird in distress out in my parking lot. Wasn't a bird, it was this guy:

My neighbor said that kittens have been popping up all over town, so I don't know if someone's been dumping them off or what. I immediately tried to give him to my friend, but her new apartment doesn't allow pets. And my boy begged and begged and begged some more. So...I guess we're keeping the little guy. He'll be going to the vet this week for a full check-up and shots.

Pending confirmation of gender, I'm pleased to introduce Barry Benjamin Bruno. ::grins:: Barry because he's fast, like the Flash, and Benjamin because my boy liked that name too and couldn't decide. (My suggestion of Bucky was summarily vetoed.) I didn't want another cat. I can't afford it, not really. But how can I say no to my boy or to that little furry face?

Not sure how old he is, but he's very, very small. Happy to report that's he's using the cat box, though, and eating very well. Now we'll see what the vet says.

In fic news, I have once again failed to meet a challenge deadline. I don't know what's with me with deadlines this year, but it's not been good. Sigh.

However, it's Monster Fest at [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri and that's sparked my muse like it always does. Without further ado...some fic!

Tomorrow morning, bright and early, I'll be on the road headed for Chicago and the Stargate Convention! Woo! I'm so ridiculously excited! Tonight I'll do all the packing. Already cleaned out the car. Sometime today, probably late, the official con schedule should be available so I'll know how to plot out each day. And I have dinner plans all set with [livejournal.com profile] ride_4ever, which makes me soooo happy! Yay!

I'll be bringing my laptop with me, so I'll try to put some updates up over the weekend and share all my fangirl squeeing with my flist. ::grins::

In writing news...there hasn't been much. Either my muse has gone ahead to Chicago, or he's just off on a bender somewhere not caring that I have all these projects I need to finish. Typical Buck. But I do have a couple three fics to share, if you're interested.

This has not been a good morning, so I thought it would be an excellent time for a gratitude post, which I haven't done in a while. So. What am I grateful for today?

Granola. Specifically Honey Bunches of Oats Dark Chocolate granola, which I've been mixing in with yogurt in the morning for my breakfast. It's crunchy and delicious and, unlike some other types I've tried, no flax seeds to get stuck in my teeth. Win!

ChiCon. I'm nine days out from my very first fangasm aka Stargate Convention. I purchased two t-shirt specifically to wear there, and a new bra because who wants to meet DHew and JFlan with a dingy bra? Not this girl.

[livejournal.com profile] comment_fic. I've done some really fun writing thanks to prompts on that comm. And there are some pretty kick-ass writers doing there thing there. That's where I met my new online BFF, [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz. She's one of the aforementioned kick-ass writers and her work regularly has me in tears. Those good, fic-induced tears where you don't mind having your heart ripped out because eventually there'll be happy endings. ::grins::

The kids from Stranger Things. I love them. I will watch every single interview they do, because they're adorable and funny and awesome, and I hope they have great careers without all the bad stuff that often seems to befall child actors.

Amazon Prime. I don't have it, but my ex does. Which essentially means I do. LOL! So when I needed to watch a particular ep of Doctor Who last night, I was able to just call it up on his account. This will also come in handy at Christmas, with all the fast, free shipping. Thanks for sharing your password with me, J!

My flist. Y'all are so nice and sweet and wonderful and supportive, and I love every single one of you! Muah! ::blows kisses::
brumeier: (Stefon)
16 days! 16 days till I'm in Chicago embarrassing myself at the Stargate Convention. ::grins:: I need to print out my registration ticket and my two photo op tickets (I'll be sure to post the pics of me sobbing all over JFlan and DHew).

Making the drive to Chi-Town with my boy, my ex and my ex's girlfriend. Yes, I know that's weird. Even better? Finances took a turn, so we're all sharing a room. And possibly living off power bars. ::shakes head:: But I don't care, cause...convention! My first one! I'm ridiculously excited. I ordered a shirt that says 'Keep Calm, McKay Will Fix It' and should be coming in the mail any day now.

Hoping to meet some peeps while I'm there. Once I get the official con schedule, I can let [livejournal.com profile] ride_4ever know because we already have plans to get together. So excited!! Hee!

In fic news, here are my latest offerings. I was hoping to have more, but words have been eluding me for the last few days.

brumeier: (Stefon)
I'm not gonna lie. I hate working. I get zero fulfillment from it. First job isn't too bad. I get to sit on my butt all day and hang out on the computer. It's a bit stressful at the moment because of copious staff changes making it hard to know who is handling what these days, and because we're frantically trying to get ready for the start of school.

Second job. That's the one I wish I could flip off and walk away from. It's been a rough month there because we had one girl go back to school and one of the managers was fired, so we're down bodies. I've been working an extra shift each week, on top of the full-time job I'm already working, and it's killing me. I hate going there every single day that I have to. ::whines::

So with all the work, I haven't been feeling overly productive with the writing as of late. My brain is just like...nope. I spent most of the weekend, when I wasn't working, bingeing old eps of JAG off my ex's Amazon account. Because that show makes me happy. And darn it, I want to be happy!

Okay, whininess over. Now on to fic, because I have been a little bit productive despite everything. So if you're interested, here are my latest fic offerings:

This weekend was brutal, weather-wise. It's been so hot here, and muggy. On Saturday the thermostat in my apartment read 86 degrees (F) and that was with all the windows open and every fan on. It's amazing I got any writing done under the circumstances, but I did! In fact, I resurrected a fic that I'd started two years ago and finally finished it. Woo! I'm liking this trend of finally finishing some of my older WIPs. I hope I can keep it going!

Nice variety of fic to share with you this week, including a nice long piece full of angsty angstiness. ::grins::
