brumeier: (SGA Meant To Be)
I finished my [livejournal.com profile] sgareversebang fic, friends! And what a battle it was, too.

It all started with art by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] velocitygrass. Isn't this gorgeous?

This beautiful art gave me a great fic idea. I was super stoked about it. But it was early days and I had other challenge fics to finish up first. Unfortunately, when it came time to actually buckle down and get moving...nope. No words for this story at all. Panic mode!

My muse, it seemed, was preoccupied with continuing the story I told in Cruisin'. Seriously preoccupied. So I consulted with my writing guru, [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz and she agreed that story would also match very well with the artwork. True fact: both stories involved our boys being soulmates, and charting their lives through the years.

I'm not completely abandoning my original idea, because if the words show up it'll still be cool. But I had a great time writing When the Time is Right. I did a ton of historical research, watched a hundred or so YouTube videos, and tried to remember how to use Photoshop Elements so I could throw some artwork in there. And, because I have zero personal management skills, I did this all in a month. (Please don't ask how many months I had to work on this. Suffice to say it was more than one.)

This was definitely a labor of love. If you want to check it out here's what you need to know:

Title: When the Time is Right
Author: [livejournal.com profile] brumeier
Pairings: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, Rodney McKay/Jennifer Keller
Rating: Teen and Up
Wordcount: 16,006
Warnings: period-typical homophobia, implied/reference drug use, all the pining

Summary: John and Rodney’s story starts in a ’56 Bel Air convertible and spans three decades of cultural turmoil, personal achievement, and loss. Will the timing ever be right for them to be together?
brumeier: (cheers)
A very Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] melagan, who deserves all the love today!

Hey! Look what I did!

This monthly challenge will be gearing up April 1st and I hope you'll join me!

(This is my first DW post, so bear with me!)
brumeier: (Writer's Block)
In non-writing topics, I have used up this year's tax return. That didn't take long, I know. And while I did get some things I didn't need, like DVDs, I also got some clothes for me and the boy, new pots and pans, four new tires for my car, and new glasses for the both of us. Plus I paid off a medical bill and paid off the storage unit. I stretched that money as far as I could!

Luckily I get an extra paycheck this month from first job, so I can put that money away for vacation in July. And get Ms. Barry fixed before she goes into heat a third time. ::shakes head::

In school news, my son is finally passing math! First time this year. I'm very excited. He also asked me to buy him books, which never happens because he hates reading. Fortuitously, the latest book report he did (using a book off the approved list) sucked him into the Ranger's Apprentice series, which he discovered he liked. So much so that he actually read the whole book before he did his report (also a first this year). I'm so happy to buy him books! The first three in the series should be arriving today.

He was also nominated by his math teacher for a week-long STEM workshop, which sounds amazing but unfortunately is so far beyond our financial means it isn't funny. Also, my boy inherited my social anxiety, so he didn't want to go even though they're doing some cool stuff. Still, it's awesome that his math teacher (you know, that class he's been failing all year) thinks he has the stuff for the workshop.

In writing news, I was struggling for a while. No words, no progress being made. But I think I've finally turned a corner. I met several of my deadlines, though the last one is giving me ridiculous amounts of trouble. I'm feeling confident in the writing, though, and that's the main thing.

If you want to see what I've been up to, here's the list!

::coughs pathetically::

I have been sick, friends. Last Monday I woke up with a cough and it just went downhill from there. Flu test was negative. Strep test was negative. Doc finally diagnosed me with pneumonia and gave me three days of antibiotics. So I'm feeling much better, except for the cough that doesn't want to go away.

Yesterday was my first day back at first job, and tonight will be my first day back at second job. I'm already feeling the loss of the afternoon nap I got used to taking. I don't imagine I'll be worth much by the time my shift is over.

Being sick put a real wrench in the works in regards to writing things and getting them finished for deadlines. But I did manage to get some things done. Including my [livejournal.com profile] romancingmcshep fic, which I sent off to be beta'd today. Posting to follow soonest!

I neglected gushing over [livejournal.com profile] blueraccoon, my dear Shoobie friend and awesome person in general. Her birthday was on Monday, and unfortunately she's getting sick too. But she should absolutely be celebrated, not the least for finishing her epic Star Trek fic quite recently. (Like, triple digit wordcount epic. For reals.) Love you, Becc!

I cheated on International Fanworks Day by posting just the art I'd done to accompany my fic. The written scenes have been posted as I finish them. Still to finish are my [livejournal.com profile] sgareversebang and [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000. Hopefully I can make more headway now that my brain fog has lifted.

Here are some fics that got posted in the last couple of weeks but not mentioned here:

The happiest of Happy Birthdays to my wonderful friend [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz! She works hard, she plays hard, and she writes all the good, angsty fic! But don't take my word for it. What does Deputy Andy think about Nagi?

My gift to Nagi was the latest installment in my Honky Tonk Blues 'verse, for which she has been incredibly supportive. Here be the deets:

Title: I'll Be There For You
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Series: Honky Tonk Blues
Pairing: McShep
Characters: John, Rodney, Woolsey, Jeannie, Kaleb
Warnings: dysfunctional family drama

Prompt: LJ Comment Fic for Hurt/Comfort prompt: Any (please no SPN), any/any, sharing a favourite treat after {Bad Thing}

In which Jeannie and Rodney have family drama and John is there to offer support.
brumeier: (Bucky Not Amused)
Hi friends! ::waves::

It's been a while since I've done a decent update on the life and times of Bru, so here it is.

My 13 year old son has a girlfriend. It's not his first one, but he was on a dating ban because the last girl that wanted to be his girlfriend was awful. She treated him horribly. Hoping this one is nicer. She's a year older. They went to the school's Winter Semi-formal dance as friends, and he asked her out at the end of the night. I applaud his bravery because I remember how terrifying that could be.

My mother is turning into quite the little activist. She participated in a Women's March in Miami the day after Inauguration Day, and this weekend she did a march in Palm Beach. Look how cute she is! (She's the one in the orange shirt.)

Pic Under Cut )

I had a scary encounter at the laundromat yesterday. I went late in the day, and I was the only one sitting in there. The laundromat has a TV mounted to the wall that unfortunately plays nothing but Fox News. I've submitted a request begging them to change it to any other channel. Otherwise I might have to scale the vending machine and look for the buttons to do it manually. Anyhoo, this big guy comes in to get his clothes out of the dryer and there's a Trump interview happening on TV. He salutes the TV, and then very loudly starts yelling at it when someone else comes on camera with some presidential criticism. The guy had an accent I couldn't place, and he was furious that anyone would say bad things about Trump. "I pray for him every night!" There was some ranting about Iranians or something, I don't know, I was trying not to listen. And then he looked at me and asked, "Do you support Trump?"

Um....

Luckily he didn't stay long.

In writing news, I'm trying to get like six or seven different fics written. It's slow going. I have gift fics and challenge fics and this crazy International Fanworks Day fic I'm struggling with. If I get them all done by deadline I'll be very pleasantly surprised.

Really big news, if only for me, is that I'm planning on starting a writing challenge on LJ which will be independent from [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri. Details Under Cut )

Here's some gratitude, which is overdue.

Finally, the one new posted fic that I have to share. So many more coming, though, I promise!

Title: Beneath the Wristband
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: McShep
Characters: John, Rodney
Warnings: Mention of past suicide attempt

Prompt: Stargate: Atlantis, John Sheppard and/or Rodney McKay, Scar (Foxes)

In which John is a mystery Rodney would love to solve, but some things are painful to learn.
brumeier: (cheers)
As usual, I'm a day late and a dollar short, but I want to send Birthday Greetings to [livejournal.com profile] selenic76. She is a delightful human being on every level and I'm so pleased to count her among my fic friends! Happy Birthday, Selenic! I hope you had a great day!

In other news, fic writing has happened. In addition to filling some prompts at [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, I've also started participating in the [livejournal.com profile] mcsheplets prompt community. All the prompts! LOL! I'm also throwing some words at my [livejournal.com profile] romancingmcshep fic and my [livejournal.com profile] sgareversebang. Deadlines loom!

Here's what I've posted since my last update:

For More Joy Day, I decided to write a gift fic because that's where my strengths lie. So I wrote another fic about Nora, an original character learning the ropes as the newest member of the SGA family.

This fic is for two lovely ladies, [livejournal.com profile] darkmoore and [livejournal.com profile] popkin16. They're both so supportive of my writing, which I appreciate more than I can say, and Popkin leaves such amazing comments every single time she reads one of my fics. Darkmoore and I converse almost daily and have had many discussions in particular about the AMTDI trope, so I wanted to put something in there about that for her. ::fistbump of solidarity::

Spread the joy, ladies! And have a wonderful day!

Title: Emergency Protocols
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Series: Learning the Ropes
Pairing: Nora (OC)/Amelia
Characters: Nora (OC), Amelia, Lorne, Woolsey, Keller, Teldy, Ronon, Rodney
Warnings: not a fun, light-hearted treatment of AMTDI (only referenced, nothing on screen)

Summary: Nora is still learning her new job on Atlantis, and that includes how to respond to offworld emergencies.
brumeier: (Stefon)
So, sometimes I make these title cards for my fics. Mostly the movie fusions, I don't know why. But for More Joy Day (today!) I made one for [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz for her Blood and Water series.

If you haven't read any of it, you really should. It's an SGA AU series where both John and Evan have mafia backgrounds that they've tried to escape from. There's some dark stuff in here, and Evan takes his organizational skills to scary new levels, but it's also very, very hopeful because they don't have to be defined by their pasts, or their parentage.

Bonus points for working in a really amazing three-way relationship in such a realistic way. It's so good, y'all!

brumeier: (Sparkly and Invalid)
Another reminder that [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup's More Joy Day is tomorrow.

Signal boosting, because this is important.

I just finished importing my journal to Dreamwidth. You can find me over there by the same name, . Right now I'm just backing things up over there. I'll still be on LJ full time, unless things go south. I just like it better over here. ::clings::

In the category of things I absolutely want but don't need, here's what I spent some of my Christmas money on:

Pic under cut )And now to the fic. Can I just say how much my muse is enjoying January so far? After struggling with fic for the previous couple of months I'm back with a vengeance, filling prompts and being awesome. How awesome, you might ask? Well, after three years participating, I finally got a bingo for [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo. All the thanks to [livejournal.com profile] darkmoore for helping make that happen!

Without further ado, here's what I've been up to so far this month (and the tail end of last month):

There are some things happening around LJ, friends, that I thought I'd bring to your attention if you didn't already know.

[livejournal.com profile] romancingmcshep is kicking off the annual John and Rodney Romance Fest, for those of you in the SGA fandom. Right now the call for prompts has gone out. Cut-off for prompts is January 16th and fics are due the end of February. You DON'T need to use a prompt for your story, but you do need to make sure it has a happy ending. Cause romance, ya'll. ::grins::

[livejournal.com profile] picfor1000 is underway with sign-ups. You have till the end of the month to let the mod know you want to participate, and stories are due March 31st. This is for any fandom, or original fic. Once sign-ups are done, you'll be assigned a picture and you have to use that as a jumping-off point for your fic, even if the finished product has almost nothing to do with the picture. It's all about inspiration. Oh, and the finished work has to be exactly 1k.

[livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup will be continuing to host the annual More Joy Day. There's a poll up regarding dates, but it looks like the popular vote wants posting to be on January 20th, the date of the US presidential inauguration. We'll definitely need some joy that day. More Joy Day is pretty simple. You do something nice for someone, be they friend or complete stranger. For me this usually means gifting a fic, but it can also mean paying for the person behind you in line for coffee, or holding open a door, or telling someone that you think they're a great person. Spread the joy!

[livejournal.com profile] logansgirl_2001 is going to be starting a regular Pride Post on Monday. This will be a place to talk about good things you've done, seen, watched, etc. Promoting good feelings and pride in our own accomplishments is a very worthy cause.

For general writerly support, I'd recommend [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri. Every Friday is a workshop day, where you can share snippets of your work for feedback. And coming up in February is the annual WIPed Into Shape event, where the goal is to motivate each other to get at least one WIP finished. Or at least make progress towards that goal, because that's a pretty laid-back comm. All the support, none of the pressure. ::grins::

And if you're looking for prompts to help kick your muse into gear, may I suggest:

[livejournal.com profile] fan_flashworks

Let's be real. 2016 was a rough year out in the world. We lost a lot of beloved icons. America gained a lunatic for a president. There was violence and natural disasters and a general feeling of hopelessness. I'd like to say that we have a chance to turn things around in 2017, but I'm not honestly very hopeful about that.

BUT. Things in my corner of the world weren't terrible. I voted in my first-ever presidential election (yes, I'm in my 40s and I'm a slacker). I attended my very first Stargate Convention and got to meet the men I write so much about. I also got to meet some of my online friends: [livejournal.com profile] ride_4ever, [livejournal.com profile] aivix, and smiles2go. I was able to keep a roof over my son's head and food on the table. I visited my mom and my grandparents in Florida. I continued to confound family and friends with my very pleasant relationship with my ex and his girlfriend. I spent a lot of quality time with my brother.

There were lady ghostbusters and lady x-wing pilots and a whole new Tarzan to ogle. I continue to expand my social consciousness. I strive to be a better person, and to make my corner of the world a happy place. I continue to be amazed at what a warm and welcoming place [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri has become.

And friends, I wrote my ass off. ::grins:: This was mostly due to [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, which I started visiting regularly for prompt inspiration. (And had the pleasant side effect of making a new super awesome friend in [livejournal.com profile] nagi_schwarz.)

I posted 157 fics this year. Gah! Insane! 130 of them were prompt fills.

My posted wordcount for the year is an astounding 269,311. So many words!

I participated in 12 fannish challenges/exchanges/etc.

My hurt/comfort bingo card has eleven squares filled in, beating my last year's record of two. No bingoes, but I'm okay with that.

For this gal, 2016 wasn't a bad year. Let's hope 2017 doesn't kick my ass. Or yours! ::hugs to all:: Better days ahead for all of us!
brumeier: (Happy Cho)
I hope everyone who was/is celebrating this month is having or has had a wonderful time of it!

My Christmas celebrations, spread out over four days, went very well. I got to spend time with just about everyone in my family, which was nice, and there was no shortage of food. A personal highlight for me was going to my mother-in-law's for lunch. She dragged my son off and when he came back he looked like this:

Pic under cut )

He'd never have done that for me, but his grandmother can get him to do anything. LOL! Most of the other pics I have of my boy from the holiday festivities feature his usual stone-faced expression, which he gets from his father. Because why would he want anyone to know he's having a good time? Kids.

Went to see Star Wars: Rogue One last night. It was awesome. And heart-breaking. It was similar to my experience going to see Titanic all those years ago. "Maybe they won't hit the iceberg this time!" ::shakes head:: Ah, well. One of the things that made me the most excited? Lady X-Wing pilots! Woo! And then of course I got the news about Carrie Fisher. Can we please not lose anyone else now? Please?

Okay, on to happier things. Like wishing a belated Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] annieb1955! I hope you had a great birthday!

Also, I have fic! Not a lot of fic, because the muse has been flighty and RL has been crazy. But I did manage to get two of my three holiday fics finished and posted. Still working on the third. Ideally I'd get that done before the New Year, but probably not. So here's the latest:

A very Happy Birthday to the wonderful, kind-hearted, Queen of Due South fic, [livejournal.com profile] ride_4ever! I had the pleasure of meeting her while I was in Chicago this year for the Stargate con and I'm so glad I did. What a sweetheart!

Nothing but good wishes for you on your birthday, Ride, and for the year to come! From me, the grumpy child known to some as Alex, and of course...the boys!

brumeier: (NoSo 2016)
Here I am, with a post full of belatedness.

Happy American Thanksgiving! Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] elderwitty! Happy everything else I've missed since my last post. ::grins::

Things have not been going well, friends. My brother is going through a divorce, and not a nice, chill one like mine. He got booted from his house, so he's set up shop on my couch for the unforeseeable future. I love my brother, I do. But not every single day in my tiny apartment. He's also unemployed, so there hasn't been any help with things like groceries, although he's been doing some handyman things and a lot of cooking. (He cooked for me on Thanksgiving because I had to work.)

Even better is that his girlfriend also spends the weekends living on my couch. Too. Many. People. Seriously, my apartment is tiny.

The most immediate fallout from this situation is that my writing has dropped off to almost nothing. I have no quiet time. No alone time. My brother went visiting relatives this past weekend and told me to enjoy the solitude. Which is funny, because I worked all day Friday, was out of the house for my own holiday visiting all day Saturday, and then he was back on Sunday.

Needless to say I'm very worried about my Secret Santa deadline, which is December 7th. I've made almost no progress on it, unless you count restarting it about four or five times. Not good, not good, not good. If anyone has a direct line to the powers that be, please put in a good word for my brother. He needs a job and an apartment that isn't mine. Please and thank you!

But somewhere along the line I did find time to write, so here's my one thing:

Title: Dance With the Devil
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: McShep
Characters: John, Rodney
Warnings: Murder, dark character, description of a corpse

Prompt: Stargate: Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, John's the charismatic serial killer who's been terrorizing people all over [east/west coast/state/area] and Rodney's the FBI officer who's been chasing after him.
brumeier: (cheers)
Getting this in just under the wire!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! To the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] squidgiepdx, who deserves all the love and adoration that is his due today.

I couldn't get you a cake, Squidgie, but I hope you'll accept this gift of smutty SGA porn instead. ::grins:: And I hope you had a really good birthday!

Title: Getting It
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: McShep
Warnings: Porny porn

Summary: Colonel Sheppard is straight. Probably. Until the day Rodney gets some definitive proof that says otherwise.
brumeier: (NoSo 2016)
The big news of the day is that it's November, which means the annual Miserable Fucks November Social has kicked off at [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri! In conjunction with NaNoWriMo, we're offering writing support and daily check-ins for the month. Even if you're not doing NaNo, November can be a good month to finish things up, or make a good amount of headway on an existing project. Come play with us!!

My big goal for the month is to start (and finish!) my [livejournal.com profile] sga_secretsanta fic. I know what I'm going to do, I just need to develop things a bit more and get going on it. It's pretty different from my usual, so I'm kind of excited and kind of nervous. ::grins::

In fic news, Monster Fest has ended and I'm pleased to say that I got eight fics written for it this year. Woo! Mostly SGA fics, with one for H50 and one for Lucifer (brand new to me) thrown in there. I always wish I could've done more. Maybe if I could keep my wordcounts down. Ah, well.

If you're interested, here's the latest!

So, since I last posted about the kitty I found in the parking lot, there have been developments. The vet confirmed that the kitten is in fact a girl. But we'd been calling her Barry for a week, and Barry she will stay. Because we don't care about gender labels. And also, I really like the name Barry (named for The Flash). ::grins::

Vet estimates she was only about five weeks old when I found her. She'll be going for all her kitten shots on Halloween. She's notoriously difficult to photograph when she's awake, but I do have this to offer:

In fic news, I was able to finish the Conspiracy Theory challenge at [livejournal.com profile] story_works, though not with the fic I originally intended to write. But I was so glad to be able to participate, and look at the cool banner I got!

Here's the latest in Brumeier fic posting, all of these entries for Monster Fest at [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri:
